Durban has always enjoyed undisputed status as South Africa 's Playground.
This is not surprising when one considers the unique combination of
factors weighing in the city's favour: fantastic weather all year
round, the immediate proximity of the warm Indian Ocean , and an
ever-increasing number of diverse entertainment options for visitors
to explore. The city is only a short drive from some of Southern Africa 's
major attractions, such as the Drakensberg, and several game reserves where
the Big Five can be viewed up close. As the 21st century unfolds, Durban
continues to entrench its position as a prime tourist destination, and
to enjoy massive economic growth that is in evidence wherever one looks.
Durban originally sprang up around the natural bay that offered a perfect
sanctuary to passing ships and today, this bay has grown into the busiest
port on the African continent. The development of the Point Waterfront is
currently underway, and promises to transform this area into one of the
City's prime locations: 19th century Naval Officers' houses have been
carefully renovated, and will soon be juxtaposed with ultra-modern an
luxurious highrise apartments and hotels. The awesome Ushaka Marine Park - a
truly world class attraction that is one of the largest of its kind in the
world - adds further appeal to the Point area.
One need only take a drive through the La Lucia Ridge Office Estate to see
that the African Renaissance is in full swing here: confidence in business
is very high, and new corporate buildings are springing up every month.
